Anyone who decides to explore the area of Lake Como, perhaps to find their dream home there, should absolutely visit the Tremezzina area. This picturesque area is located on the western side of the lake and is known for its charming villages, historic villas and breathtaking views of the water and surrounding mountains.
Tremezzina has a fascinating history behind it which dates back to Roman times, when it was considered an important center for commerce and manufacturing. Throughout the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance, the territory was home to several important families, such as the Visconti and the Sforza, whose legacy is still visible today in the local architecture and culture.
Places to see in Tremezzina: from Villa Carlotta to Comacina Island – and more
One of the most popular attractions in Tremezzina is Villa Carlotta, a stunning eighteenth-century villa and magnificent botanical garden. The Milanese marquis Gian Battista Sommariva once owned the villa, which was later purchased by Princess Marianne of Nassau. Today, the estate is open to the public and showcases a collection of paintings, sculptures, and other works of art. This means that you can take a leisurely stroll through the gardens, admire its impressive art pieces and learn about the history of the villa and its former owners.
Another must-see destination in the Tremezzina area is Comacina Island (if you want to know more about it, we suggest you read our previous article!). This tiny island – the only one on Lake Como – is steeped in history and boasts some of the most spectacular views in the Lombardy region. The island can be reached via lake, and visiting it means being able to explore its rich nature and the ruins of its ancient Romanesque church, dating back to the eleventh century.
The Greenway of Lake Como is an excellent option for those who enjoy hiking and outdoor activities. This scenic trail winds through the Tremezzina area and offers stunning views of the lake and mountains, in a panoramic scenery caught between Heaven and Earth. And if you’re a fan of water sports, remember that this area is also perfect for swimming, kayaking or paddleboarding in the lake.
Since outdoor activities work up an appetite, make sure to sample the delicious local cuisine while you’re in Tremezzina. The area is known for its fresh fish-based recipes, homemade pasta and local wines. There are plenty of charming restaurants and cafes in this ancient borgo where you can enjoy a leisurely meal while enjoying the stunning views. And while you relax after lunch or after dinner, don’t forget to appreciate the art and architecture this area offers: you can discover ancient religious buildings, such as the Church of San Lorenzo, with its splendid Romanesque bell tower and beautiful frescoes.
If you’re a history buff, you can also visit the Museo della Barca Lariana, a museum dedicated to the traditional boats used on Lake Como. The museum showcases a variety of boats, including the famous “lucie,” traditional wooden boats once used for fishing and transportation.
Finally, consider visiting Sacro Monte di Ossuccio: it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and includes fourteen chapels decorated with beautiful frescoes depicting the life of Christ. In addition, it offers the usual breathtaking view of the lake and the surrounding mountains!
Overall, Tremezzina is an area to be discovered by anyone who wants to get to know the beauty, history and culture of Lake Como more closely. With its many attractions and activities, this fascinating area inspires visitors from all over the world every year.
