Villa Cardina is located in Como, a beautiful town in Lombardy, Northern Italy, and directly on Lake Como. Extremely loved by many notorious personalities of the past – Richard Wagner being only one of them -, Como gave birth to several historically notable figures, such as the scientist Alessandro Volta, Pope Innocent XI, Pliny the Elder and the Younger. Today, Como represents one of the most interesting cities in Italy, thanks to its several works of art, beautiful villas, amazing natural environment and ecosystems, luscious palaces and churches.
Situated at the southern tip of the south-west arm of Lake Como, the city is located 40 kilometres (25 mi) north of Milan; the city borders Switzerland and the nearby major cities are Varese, Lecco and Lugano.
Among the many main sights of the city, it’s worth mentioning the Cathedral, whose construction started in 1396 and representing today one of the most interesting Gothic buildings of the region; the Romanesque church of San Fedele, the Neoclassic Villa Olmo – which housed Napoleon, Ugo Foscolo, Franz Ferdinand I and Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Monumental Fountain to Volta’s battery, and the ancient medieval walls.
